Looking for networking opportunities within Investment Banking, Corporate Finance, or Consulting

Veteran

Harry Kessler New Milford , CT

I am looking for the opportunity to network with individuals in the above mentioned industries to better define the direction of my career path. I've been trading futures and stocks on a short term basis for a small firm over the past year and a half where I started after finishing my MBA and being honorably discharged from the Navy. The system I trade is based on technical analysis with very little, if any, fundamental analysis involved. I would like to move away from the short term nature of my trading and move towards taking a longer term outlook on the markets or on business development. My longer term goal would be, ideally, to get into private equity, specifically in Aerospace and Defense. I have an understanding of different valuation methodologies as well as leveraged buyouts. I have also worked on the business plan of a start-up company which I found very rewarding.

I understand that this is a wide range of interests, but I am looking to learn about your business, further develop my network, and find the correct career path for myself moving forward.

Thank you for your time.

A good networking venue for you might be the Association for Corporate Growth, I used to do PR and white paper assignments for a small investment bank in Boston and they were very active in the Boston branch of ACG. Check out a branch near you and I'm sure you'd meet some helpful people. I went to a couple meetings over the years with various clients and they were always well attended.

Have you requested an assigned one-on-one mentor from ACP?

Thank you for the suggestions about ACG and the ACP mentor. I recently found a new position in south Florida as a Portfolio Manager for a commercial aerospace company which I will be starting in late July. I got a lot of help from the contacts made through ACP as well as my alumni network. I will continue cultivate the network and hopefully I can give back to the ACP community in the future. Thanks again!

Hi Harry,

Here is one possible path. I know this because I think my wife might be on this trajectory. She works for the Boston Consulting Group in Healthcare. However, because of the types of consulting she does, she knows how to do financial modeling and is beginning to understand how to valuate and perform P&L calculations. However, she depends on the Investment Bankers to get the nitty-gritty parts of the modeling right... because that's what they do.

When she does decide to leave consulting, one option is private equity, because she will by then have the requisite experience to perform the needed tasks.

My advice is to try out consulting first, preferably at McKinsey, BCG, or Bain. Work there for a couple of years, perhaps 4 or 5 years. Then you'll be perfectly situated to make the transition into PE.

Message me if you wish to discuss in more detail. craig.bush@gmail.com

Harry -- I'd be happy to connect with you, to share my experiences and see if I can help you think through next steps. I served 6 years active duty, then got an MBA right after leaving. I've spent my career (25 years) around corporate finance -- at an oil company, at GE Capital, and for the past 4 years, in more entrepreneurial roles (2 years at a startup, 2 years on my own). My expertise is renewable energy, so not directly applicable, but please contact me if you'd like (mklutey@alumni.princeton.edu)
