I am asking that someone take a look at my LinkedIn profile (URL below) and potentially my resume to provide constructive criticism. I feel that I have a very strong and diverse background, but at the same time, the diversity makes it slightly generic and hard to fine-tune as I transition into another position and industry (I was recently laid off after my employer discovered I was passively looking for advancement, both internally and externally) and therefore, I would also greatly benefit from suggestions in regards to what types of positions my skills are most suited for in an expert's opinion.

No need to read any literature, your resume is the key. What you will find is that each HR employee will have certain likes and dislikes. Tailor your resume to the position your seeking.
Sometimes you might have to accept a lower position and than work your way up. The Railroads love prior military because their structure was set up by former Army Officers.

Barry, I have reviewed your profile and it is pretty solid. The Summary is well-stated as far as your capabilities and achievements but it still lacks focus on what you are looking for. Ideally, the first line should state "who you are" which would also mesh with what you are looking for (ex: "...an experienced Security Manager with over XX years of progressive leadership..."). Without such a statement, the rest is rudderless because all the rest should focus on how your qualifications and experience back up your ability to do what you are pursuing.
