Seeking advice/networking on gaining entry into the global management consulting industry.

Veteran

Jesse Rice Cordova , TN

Greetings,

I am a 27 year old wounded veteran who is presently employed as a Congressional Staff Assistant. In September of this year I will graduate with a B.S. in Intelligence Management. I currently am seeking careers in the global management consulting job field. Because of lacking an MBA and professional private business management experience I am pursuing possible developmental program options. I would greatly appreciate any advice or networking opportunities that one may have. I could email you my Cover Letter/Resume if you desire to provide further advice or assistance.

Sincerely,

Jesse Rice

One additional thought - most mgmt consultants I have dealt with over the years have had at least a Masters degree. Of course, your years of service also count for a lot, too! Being open to that higher education may help you, though.

Jesse,
My personal experience. SMSgt, USAF Retired. I completed 20 years with two undergraduate degrees. Following a brief time of job changing, I landed a job with an education-supportive company. The beginning employer doesn't have to be your final career company. It could be, but you can also use it to your advantage as a stepping stone and ladder for developing yourself. i.e. Learn the corporate world versus military world. After I joined my first company, I knew I wanted to keep growing. I chose two avenues. First, to leverage both my undergraduate degrees with my military experience in logistics. I joined the Project Management Institute and began work on my PMP certification. Secondly, I continued work on my formal education. I pursued a MBA via an Executive MBA program using military benefits. It was more hours than a regular MBA, but my opinion is that you gain so much from both the experience and education as well as the adventure. A solid two years of work on these was stressful at times. Following the PMP Certification and MBA degree, working on my career company goals was much easier - plus I had almost three years of corporate learnings and experience to leverage as well. All in all, I'd do it again. The sooner the better. Set your goals and work a plan to get there. Keep up the positve thinking!

Hi,

I would definitely begin preparing for the case interview. There are a number of sources available both online and probably at your local public library. An MBA is definitely NOT a prerequisite, but will mean that you potentially come in at a lower level in the organization. My company has a history of hiring former military members. I would definitely look closely at your military career and figure out how you demonstrate skills that consulting companies are looking for like communication, analytic skills, teamwork, etc.

Please let me know if you have any additional questions.

Thanks,
Katie

Hi Jesse,

Thank you for your service and godspeed on your amends. Depending on your location, you can research the top consulting firms for available offices/presence in your area. Some of them would be the Big 4 accounting firms (Accenture, Deloitte, PWC, KPMG) that provide a vast array of consulting services and also McKinsey. A MBA is not a requirement to gain entry with the consulting firms but does not hurt however your military experience is a plus. I would check out their websites, see what services they offer and look for present job openings on their company website.

Best of luck and thanks again for your service.

Hoo-Ah.

Sincerely,

Accursio V. Marciante
