I am originally from the south and after a few years in NYC would like to move closer to home. I am targeting Charlotte because it is the 2nd largest FS sector in the U.S.

Justin - I think the first step is to create a profile on LinkedIn. As a recruiter it is where I go to find talent both in and out of my network. You should note that you are open to career opportunities and what you are looking for as you are in transition. I looked on LinkedIn for your profile but could not find it. The steps I would take after that are as follows:
1) target companies in Charlotte - make a list
2)on LinkedIn connect with individuals at those companies that are doing work that you want to do.
3) look at open positions in Charlotte for FP&A professionals
Finally, I would also suggest you think if your skills might work in another industry. For instance can you take your FP&A skills and apply them in a finance role at another Charlotte company like Lowe's (retailer) etc....
You can find me on LinkedIn and i'd be happy to connect with you and be a resource for you. Best of luck.
Justin,
You are absolutely hitting the right market in Charlotte. Although my closest resources are in the Raleigh/Durham area, my organization has a sizable footprint in Charlotte and we are a in constant search of veterans to bring into our organization. Please take a look at our site which explains a bit of our contribution:

I see we have a couple of open positions in our Charlotte office which may interest you (available via a search in the link above). If you want to take a look at MetLife and let me know if you have any interest in the organization, I would be happy to take your resume and share with my recruitment team so they can get it over to the Charlotte office for consideration of current and future roles.
Further, I do have some recruitment resources which branch into the Charlotte market and would suggest you connect with Sean Smith at Sherpa indicating I referred you.

You are spot-on! Charlotte is home to some giant banking centers - Bank of America and Wacovia to name just two. Both have strong commitments to hiring Veterans.
To answer your question about networking-- I strongly recommend a professional organization in your field. There is the National Association of Insurance and Financial Advisors. Even if you are not an advisor, you usually can join and meet people. The Association for Financial Professionals (afonline.org) might be helpful as well. There are some virtual meetings and forums to join while you are still in NY. Also check LinkedIn and search on financial analysts in Charlotte, NC and check those profiles for organizations. Oh and LinkedIn has a network feature that may help you as well.
Best of luck.
