Robert:
I think your initial step would be to talk or meet with similar non-profit organizations that have existing recreational leagues in your state . It seems to be it would be a lot simpler and less expensive to be affiliated with an existing organization than forming your own . If you decide to organize your own entity, I’d strongly suggest you consult with an attorney with expertise in starting non-profits . I’d also suggest first determining the costs involved in doing so. The first major cost that comes to mind is Liability Insurance. I’m certain there are other initial costs to consider . It seems to me a far wiser and inexpensive route is to align yourself with an existing organization that could provide you with support and structure .
Good luck.

HI Robert,
We have a lot of no-cost content on our SkillsBuild platform designed to help advise you regarding how to run a business. There is a good deal of info available here: https://skillsbuild.org/reignite
Hi Robert,
Thank you for posting your question! While I am not a small business expert myself, I did want to share some ideas that may point you in the right direction:
1 - I would strongly suggest reaching out to Advisors on the community feature of ACP AdvisorNet (https://acp-advisornet.org/community/advisors). It is a great way to ask Advisors with small business experience directly for advice from types of insurance to running an LLC.
2 - I would also recommend the Small Business Administration website (https://www.sba.gov/) since they offer free business counseling and some useful resources such as a step-by-step plan on developing a business.
Best,
Dara
