I completed studies and have obtained an EdD in Organizational Leadership last year. Prior to that have worked in the business sector for years and downsized early this year. Decided to start my own company in management consulting, but would love to still teach. I had also been an adjunct for 12 years prior to focusing 3 years ago on my doctrine. It now seems impossible to get any faculty role even at the community college level. I understand enrollments have dropped, but is there something bigger picture wise that might be hampered my pursuits? Any suggestions on how to pursue faculty openings would be greatly appreciated. Thanks you all for your service!

Hi Frank,
Thank you for posing this thoughtful question and for your service in the US Army. Congratulations on recently being awarded your EdD. Tremendous accomplishment! I had a chance to review your LinkedIn including your CV and you have an impressive background to say the least; an asset to any organization whether it be in an instructional and/or consulting capacity.
Having served as an Adjunct Professor myself for six years and currently an ABD (All But Dissertation) in a PhD program in Mental Health Counseling, I can relate to the sentiments you've expressed. Whilst most institutions of higher education, whether it be a two-year, four-year or even technical school are predominately run by Adjunct Instructors, the grim reality is there is more supply than demand. With that said, I would highlight your strong area of expertise in curriculum design, pedagogy and metacognition when speaking to Department Chairpersons about your candidacy for Adjunct assignments.
Chances are you've already sought a teaching position at your alma maters but if not, that's a good start. One of my colleagues in my PhD cohort was offered a full-time Professorship a mere few weeks after defending her dissertation. If not at your alma mater itself, leveraging their relationships with Chairpersons at surrounding schools whether it be for an informational type interview or something a bit more formal may also yield fruitful outcomes toward the goal of securing a teaching position again. I also suggest gaining a level of comfort and familiarity with online teaching if you have not already as that form of instruction appears to be more and more prevalent these days and could increase the likelihood of landing a teaching position.
In summary, having earned a terminal doctorate should only make you an even stronger candidate coupled with your 12 years of prior teaching experience. It certainly will not hamper future opportunities. As discouraging as it may be sometimes, as the ole saying goes, "you miss 100% of the shots you don't take" so keep on keeping on!
Wishing you lots of luck and sending even more positive energy moving forward.
Best,
Robert
My pleasure, Frank! Happy to help. Wishing you a relaxing weekend as we remember those who have paid the ultimate sacrifice.
Best,

Hey Robert,
First and foremost thank you for responding and the encouraging words. You are spot on in your analogy of "shots not taken". I will remember that in my continued pursuit. Thanks again!
Regards
Frank
