Hi, I am currently employed as a Dental hygienist in the Atlanta, GA area, and pursuing a Masters in Healthcare Informatics with a graduation date for October 2014. I am looking for a help finding someone in the Atlanta area for guidance in this career changing moment.
For me this is comparable to leaving the military, leaving something I have done for years with ease. Leaving the familiarity of Dentistry, (being a Dental Hygienist), something that I have done since I entered the Army in 1995. Healthcare Informatics is new for me; I am requesting help navigating my way.

Richard, Thank you for responding to my earlier posted. Yes, definitely I would like to get more information about becoming an Information Security Officer or HIPPA Officer. I will send you an invitation on LinkedIn.
Hi Nicola, I'm the Information Security Officer for a large hospital in NYC. I've gotten into this field via an IT route, but can be available to help answer questions if you'd like to speak.
I will contact Grand Canyon University; I have gotten some feedback from the LinkedIn Search of Healthcare Informatics and Veteran Mentors.
Ask Grand Canyon University if they have a database or network of alumni who have degrees or are working with your field(s) of interest.
Also ask the individuals that are teaching the courses to help you network and build contacts.
Tom,

I am a member of the following professional organizations;
1. American College of Healthcare Executives (ACHE) and Local Georgia chapter
2. American Medical Informatics Association (AMIA)
3. Healthcare Information and Management Systems Society (HIMSS) and Local Georgia chapter
I will research the link you posted earlier
You can also utilize LinkedIn to find potentate mentors. There are 16 member of "The Veteran Mentor Network" group on LinkedIn who have the term "healthcare informatics" as a keyword in their profile.
Sounds good. What are the 3 professional organizations?
I must be on the right track, because within the last three months I joined three professional organizations both at the national level and at the local charters if it was available in my chosen career field. I am involved in my undergraduate alumni network program and I have attended some of their leadership events.
Reach out to Grand Canyon University. Your college should ABSOLUTELY be a primary resource in regards to your career-development and eventually your job-search. They should be able to help you develop a typed, personal, comprehensive, ongoing and agile "career development" plan.

Also consider programs at other schools, including schools that offer both remote learning and in-person, face-to-face, shoulder-to-shoulder learning and teaching. Learn which schools offer access to valuable alumni networks, local alumni clubs, a solid career-planning and career development center, and interaction with staff, professors, leaders, etc.
I'll follow up later with more ideas.
Thanks for responding Tom, I am currently attending Grand Canyon University, The Healthcare Informatics Masters degree program is online.
