I need to start a SDVOSB to provide staffing support to large primes on DoD contracts. How to?

Veteran

Ben Palmer Mckinney , TX

I recently received my package and first payment for my service disability from the VA. I carry a valid DoD Top Secret Clearance, was honorably discharged from the USMC, and have connections to get added to some supplier lists with a large DoD Prime Contractor. I have all of the right pieces to be well positioned, but don't have the "know how" to register my business, select what kind of business to open (i.e. LLC, Corp, etc etc), or how to get SDVOSB status with the VA. I have registered for a mentor on SCORE, but need any additional information from anyone that can help. I was layed off today, and plan on claiming unemployment, but need help quickly so I can stay afloat during this process. Do I take out a business loan to pay myself in the meantime. Many many questions.... please help!

Hello Ben,

I'm sure you already have done so, but perhaps your local SBA may have some insight or perhaps your State VA rep.

Looks like there are only a few but the nearest office I saw was in Arlington, TX

Office Name Arlington Workforce Center
Address 140 W Mitchell St
City Arlington
Zip 76010
Phone 817/ 804-2649; 2880; 2649

I am not familiar with these programs, but I know the VA has a Grant program that may be able to help.

Ben - You have covered a few good points. A written business plan and SDVOSB certification are important steps to take.

score.org is a good first step.

PTAC's can help with SDVOSB certification and status. Find a "local" PTAC and schedule an appointment.
