My contract of 9 years in the AV industry just ended and I’m hoping to transition back into journalism and freelance writing. I have a BA in Business Administration and a MA in Communications with a heavy focus on writing and journalism. I’ve been a military journalist since 2006 and am hoping to translate that into a civilian career as well. It’s been almost a decade since I’ve been in pursuit of my goal. My hope is to find a mentor with a similar background that can help me through this transition. Thank you.

As a fiction and nonfiction writer who has been self-employed for over 15 years, I'd be happy to chat with you about networking, finding gigs, and making things happen in the writing world. Feel free to reach back and we can set up a Zoom or phone call.
Consider joining Military Veterans in Journalism: https://www.mvj.network/
It’s a great organization that looks to get vets into reporting jobs across the country.
Hi -- I work at the UTexas School of Journalism and Media. Can you tell me a bit more about your skills and what sort of topics you cover? I might not be able to mentor you directly, but with luck I can help you get started. First thing I've noticed: freelancers do better with a very specific specialty, covering beats such as science-directed health care, criminal justice, or certain kinds of lifestyle news.
Check with HireMilitary they work on the skill bridge program a lot. Join groups in the career, seeking information concerning internships. Conduct some Informational Interviews with people in a career or position you would like. Gather information on how they found the position, why they choose the field, questions that lets them share their career with you. It is amazing how many people like to assist veterans seeking help in career research, be sure to seek information the internship or a position. Then utilize these relationships to build a larger network.
Clearly a mentor would be a great help. ACP has an excellent reputation in providing great mentors. Thanks for your service, God Bless.
