I have my Bachelor's degree in Criminal Justice Forensics. I am having extreme trouble getting my foot in the door or finding position openings. Does anyone have advice for how to start this career?

HI Jessica,
When people think of forensics they typically think of labs supporting the police like in CSI. Have you considered opportunities in the insurance industry? Large insurers like the Travelers maintain forensic labs to support investigation of claims https://www.travelers.com/claims/capabilities/specialized-support/forensics-laboratory
While I work in IT if you are interested in finding out more contact me and I'll see if I can find someone in that area that you can contact for questions.
Good Luck
Hi Jessica,
That is an incredibly competitive field, one where experience is paramount. In the spirit of getting your foot in the door, have you applied for internships in the area of criminal justice forensics?
Gaining experience and the networking that will come from an internship may put you on the right trajectory in ultimately securing a FT position in the field.
Probably something you’ve already considered, but figured wouldn’t hurt mentioning.
Best,
Rob
Hi Jessica-
Thanks for your service!
Check out a company called SNA International, and monitor their job postings. Their website also offers some good resources for your career field.

Good luck!

I’d suggest that you network at the target company or industry. Use LinkedIn to find people already working there and reach out to them. Ask them the process they used to get hired and ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and if they are willing, ask them to submit you as a referral. These activities require much more time on your part but in my opinion would greatly increase your chances for success. Good luck!
Thank you so much! I am new to your wonderful site so I appreciate the advice. I have definitely tried to get internships. I went back to college for it as a lot of agencies only offer them to current students. My local police department only had 1 internship opening, and unfortunately it was given to someone else.
Hi Jessica,
Thank you for your question!
I would recommend taking a look at our "Community" tab and then clicking on the "Advisors" section. From there, you can filter by career field and directly message Advisors with experience in those areas.
You can also take a look at our "Jobs" tab for possible openings, as well as job sites like Indeed (https://www.indeed.com/), where a few open forensics and CSI positions popped up after a quick search.
I hope this helps!
Best,
Michaela
