I want to get a job in Los Angeles, on a movie set. How can I? I can't find anything that is not unionized. Are those opportunities available to normal people?
Answers
Major motion pictures & television jobs in L.A. are union gigs, demanding high skill levels. (There are some nonunion jobs, but often pay is low, barter, or none.)
I suggest you inventory your skills (thoroughly & objectively) and see where you might fit in. IF you just want to want to work within the entertainment industry, you may want to target firms that supply the movie sets (prop houses, plant rental businesses, etc. etc.); those jobs would be nonunion. But you would face the typical challenges of gaining new employment: experience, skills, recommendations, and such.
It all begins with your skills and experience, and your posting didn't address that. If you are able to provide more information, you may receive advice that is more helpful.
Unfortunately the film and TV industry and CA are very union friendly. Vancouver, Canada on the other hand makes tons of file and not sure about the union climate there.
Hi Chandler,
Thanks for reaching out! If you haven't already, I definitely suggest exploring the `Community` page on AdvisorNet to see if there are any advisors with movie set experience near LA zip codes.
I also suggest reading Moviemaker's article from a few years ago about Union vs. Non-Union employment. This gives you some studio perspective on how they hire and search for actors.
