Any successful Crisis Management/Disaster Response consultants here?

I just completed the book, "No More Dreaded Mondays" by Dan Miller which totally re-framed my perspective on results-based work versus hourly/salary work. I haven't fully given up on the traditional model of work, but it would seem that I might have more of a chance of achieving my goals as an independent contractor.

I'd like to know how you might have started on the independent path; or literature you may have found helpful in understanding how to 'sell' your clients on your services.

William

Every self-assessment I conduct tends to lead me down this path. I feel like I have skills and an uncanny interest in keeping others safe by planning and preparing for potential crises. I also believe I can teach others to mitigate in their own private and professional environments.

What I feel I need to do now is connect with someone who has taken similar skills and run with them. Thanks for the feedback and motivation.

William,
I had a radio & TV repair business I started and ran for 5 years in the '60s & '70s while I was working for the Army Support Center. One of the things I learned is that in order to have a successful business (which includes contracting), you have to first figure out what you really enjoy doing. A 'job' is something you do to earn money to do what you enjoy doing. A career is something you do because you want to and enjoy doing it. Once you figure out what you want to do, all you have to do is do it. Your clients will know if you really enjoy what your doing and will pass your name to friends and associates. That's how you build a business.
The basics of starting the business you can get via the internet; eg; the book keeping, legalities, etc.(just 'Google' the subject).

Good luck in your endeavors,

Bob

Thank you for the reply. I just reviewed the Air and Waste Management site, and you were correct, I would have never though to check there. Good lead!

I have worked for several US Manufacturing firms who have used Crisis Management/Disaster Response consultants rather than keeping them on staff full time. These consultants have assisted our facilities with development of emergency response plans as well as drills, trainings, etc. Although it may not seem obvious, these consultants have worked for various environmental consulting firms on a contract basis. I would recommend looking into an association such as Air and Waste Management. They offer regular networking opportunities with representatives of various consulting firms. The association can be joined at either your local level and/or national level. I find the local chapter to be the most useful, as many of these offer monthly luncheons, etc and are less expensive than the national membership. I think it would be a great opportunity to get your foot in the door with an environmental consulting firm - they are oftentimes looking for this type of experience!

Best wishes,
Joyce
