This all new to me, but qualifying for disability seems to be impossible and i would much rather work. I'm not trying to get rich or anything just want to make a living. I have a mower and a weed eater and I am still able to mow grass so I thought why not. I need help and advice I am looking into a business licence now, but I don't quite understand every thing. I am also trying to find ideas of what I could do during winter. I have a few ideas but no money to finance winter ideas
Thank you!

Richard,
I think it's great you want to start your own business, however, if you do want to get a job,
I don't know about qualifying in WVA, I would think your military disability paperwork would be sufficient.
The Department of Rehabilitation will help you find a job or given your job interests will support your education plan to get a job. Again, I believe your military paperwork should be sufficient to make you eligible.
People here switch to snow plowing in the winter.
Good luck,
Susana
Richard,
I have some friends in the mowing business. One thing they have said before is that it is great if you can find jobs in clusters. If you can mow three or more lawns without loading your trailer back up and moving to the next site, it saves time and money.
If you land one job, see if you can get referrals from that customer in the same area/neighborhood. Or knock on some doors, or post fliers in that immediate area. Be neat, clean and professional with your mowing and fliers. It's ok to tell people that you are a veteran or run a veteran owned business...but it won't me the only reason someone hires you.
Make sure you do an exceptional job. There are a lot of people out there mowing (at least in my area) and if someone doesn't do a good job, they'll hire the next guy.
If you can get some commercial jobs, those help too. They are usually larger and you might be able to get other odd jobs with them if you do a good job for them.
If I can be of further help, just holler.

Richard,
There is a free service to veterans who want to start and own their own business. It's called Vet Biz Central and their website is www.vetbizcentral.org. They should be a big help with getting you started.
Richard, I am not sure what you need for licensing within the state of WV. I would suggest checking with your local Chamber of Commerce as they should be able to help you. If you have the equipment I would post flyers (inexpensive) and get the word out. Not sure if you want to extend to basic landscaping to start off with. You might also want to find a non-profit, like a homeless shelter or school and offer your services at no charge, a way to get your business going and give back to your local community. While I know you have given to the safety of our country, and I thank you for that, I am not trying to discount that. Your focus on the community you live in will help build your reputation and your business. For the winter, worry about that around September. I am sure something will offer itself once you build your brand. Good luck.
Best,
Robert
