Resume help, Please!

Veteran

Ronald Cooke Clarksville , TN

In 60 days I am retiring from the Army after 22 years of service, and with a B.S. in Business Administration. As a professional who knows that my logistical background, skillsets and tireless work ethic would greatly benefit any organization. However, due to the lack of responses to the opportunities I have applied for, I feel that my resume is falling short of the goal line. Can someone please critique my resume? I just need an opportunity to get my foot into the door of a prominent business who is looking for an enthusiastic manager.

Ronald,
Without looking at your resume I would guess that you have stated all your years in the military (military experience is good) but at the same time you're showing yourself to be an older worker (meaning more expensive to hire). Employers want inexpensive employees yet skilled. Payroll is their biggest expense and if you show to much through your use of dates then you're showing yourself to be expensive to hire. Your resume only has one function and that is to get you an interview and if you reveal the fact that you're an older worker (no matter what shape you might be in or what you think you can do) lots of experience means that the employer will have to pay extra for all of that and because in their eyes you could be expensive to hire, they aren't giving you the opportunity to interview. An unwritten rule with resume writing is don't go back anymore than 10 years. If you have experience outside of that boundary, set up another category on your resume entitled "Additional Skill and Experience" Then you can list all those things that you want on your resume without dates that could be hurting you due to your age. Know that in an interview, the interviewer can legally only ask you what branch you were in and what your MOS was. There are some additional tips for writing a resume that will get you those interviews, but seemingly to many for this space so if you would like some additional help, please feel free to contact me. If you decide to have someone assist you with writing your resume, make sure that you recruit the help of a veteran because we understand and can help you to highlight your military experience which employers are looking for. (Personnel Management Specialist - Army, former TAP instructor, and worked in Veteran Services for the government assisting veterans with employment issues, so I'm here to help!!!!)
