Hi Everyone,
After spending 11 yrs in the Navy and working for various large defense companies, I'm interested in breaking into construction management (specifically assistant PM, project engineer, or estimating) for a General or Electrical contractor in the Southern California region. I was wondering what quals are they looking for? Would love to hear some insights from the folks in the industry. I have an electrical engineering degree, a MBA from USC, and a PMP cert from San Diego State University. Thanks

Hi Wen,
Thanks for your question. I have found a few resources that may be useful as you consider construction management:
How to Get Into Construction Project Management? (https://www.careermetis.com/get-into-construction-project-management/) gives a comprehensive overview of what that role entails.
Careers in Construction Management (https://www.thebalancesmb.com/what-are-employers-looking-for-in-construction-managers-3960274) identifies some skills that a career in construction management utilizes.
I also did a search on ONet Online (https://www.onetonline.org/find/quick?s=construction+management) which is a great resource for career exploration.
Additionally, I would highly recommend exploring the Community part of ACP AdvisorNet and reach out to Advisors that have backgrounds in Manufactoring and Construction (https://acp-advisornet.org/community/advisors).
I hope this helps, Wen. Thank you for your service.

With your qualifications, you might want to look at client development or project controls.
