Veteran

Ryan Dinkel Salida , CA

I am trying to find out what to do with a B.S. degree in psychology or a career direction while completing the Masters program. Are there any ideas or options?

Hi Ryan, thank you for your service to our country. The brief answer is anything you want. The deeper dive involves your interests, skills and experience. Your undergraduate degree is less important than your professional and life experiences. Certainly an appointment with a career counselor at your grad school is appropriate. Additionally start to conduct informational interviews with companies or not for profits that hold some interest for you. This will start the process of helping your frame and refine your search; plus you will develop some great network contacts. Good luck!

Ryan,

With your military background, you may want to consider federal employment.

1. You receive a preference during the hiring process (for most applications);

2. You can buy back your time towards retirement.

Right now the DOJ BOP is actively hiring, and we have authority to work directly with qualified applicants. This is a VERY viable option for you.

Additionally, my company provides free resume critiques to all military service members. You can submit your resume to us via email or by using our secure online submission form: http://expertresumesolutions.com/freeresumereview/

or email your resume to: Info@ExpertResumeSolutions.com

Please allow 3-5 business days for completion. We use two different formats for corporate and federal applications. I can send you examples of each to get you started.

Make an appointment with a career counselor at the school you attend for your Masters. Jobs are available, but perhaps not in your home town/state. Your options may seem vague now, but an in-depth conversation with someone whose job it is to help you will enable you to set a goal and pursue it. If you are studying online, then go to the nearest university.

If you have done this and are not satisfied, do your own research using Google first to find out what occupations require a B.S. degree and where they are in the country or the world.

I see by your profile you are a planner and a doer. Suggest you go to a non-profit... to what use to be called a protected workshop and now called pre-employment training. These facilities are in many size markets..even rural small ones. I volunteered for one after retiring that was in a major market. The facility worked with adult clients with an IQ of 70 or lower....2 percent of the total US population. It was advanced with a sales guy that pitched the clients capabilities to end users. I drove the delivery truck and taught clients how to fold boxes. You could be the glue at a facility like these between the Social Workers and the fund raisers.

My son too, has his undergraduate and plans to continue. He currently works at a clinic that trains autistic kids to be more verbal. It is a full time job, but almost all therapists there also go to school. It is a for-profit center with a long waitlist of kids and only accepts insurance cases. Happy to provide more info, if interested.
