How to list Reserve duty and deployments in an online application profile?

Veteran

I've been in the Reserves for 12 years with 3 deployments, 2 of which overlapped my civilian jobs. I've tailored my resume pretty well to make my "employment history" pretty clear, but filling out online profiles for applications is trickier. I want to ensure it's understandable, clear and fairly concise but captures the experience I offer. Is it better to list each deployment as a separate 'job' entry and a 4th entry for my Reserve time, or create a single entry and state that I've been deployed 3 times? What about civilian jobs? Should multiple positions at the same company be listed separately or under a single entry?

Trevor,
I was also a Reservist with multiple deployments, as well as civilian job experience.

Based on advice I received from professional career coaches, on my resume I created separate sections for my civilian and military experience. I show the dates I served at each rank and/or role in the military. As far as deployments, I just mention the month, year and location of each deployment.

Mark, I'm a little late to this, but I do agree with Darlene and would add that there are no hard and fast rules for most companies you're looking at. You should separate positions / deployments / jobs in the way that makes it easiest for you to communicate your accomplishments.

If you believe that your deployments were similar enough to group and you want to list your accomplishments from them under one heading for impact and/or for ease of reading, that's your answer. Another reason to consolidate is if you have no accomplishments of note (maybe they don't relate to the positions you're applying for) but you want to list the experience.

Same with listing different positions at one company - if the positions were of short duration or similar in responsibility, it may be easier / more impactful for you to combine them and list your accomplishments under a group heading.

Hi Mark,

If each deployment outlined a different position, then I would recommend you list each deployment.
