Resume Review

Veteran

Michael Young Highland Park , IL

I have 19 active years in U.S. Army and I have been working on my resume. It has been challenging trying to capture my accomplishments and skills and mirror it for the private sector. I have a BA and Master's degree and just want my resume to be able to reflect my experience and educational level appropriately. From one servicemember to another, could some please give me an honest assesment on draft resume that I have put together? I would be trememondoulsy greatful.

Michael,
From one lay resume writer to another; A VA counselor told me that the human resources in most companies rely on algorithms to find matches for the positions they fill. The program is very similar to the plagiarism-checkers you find in college, but it helps rather than hurts you if you know how to use it. In other words, you need to plagiarize the job description to the best of your ability.
I literally learned this yesterday, came home, cut and pasted a job description into my Summary (tweaked it so I'm not lying) and applied; HR called me this morning… This is after applying to 70+ jobs with what "I thought they wanted". The key lesson: Write the resume that they want, not the one you want.

I'm still trying to find out how to get an entry-level position in a financial institutional these days since all work requires experience, regardless of your degree...

Hi Michael, first let me thank you for your services
When it comes to resume the old paper version are not being used very commonly, but still some do, the best place to create a digital Resume is to join the Linked-in and make your PROFILE the resume that everyone can see and connect, the profile should show others that Who you are, How your skills can help others, and your Experience,( in the same order) BUT before anything begins you have to decide What you want to be ( you love what you are doing or Want to a Business man and WHY???)
after all most businesses and deals are done with people that you know or some else know and connect you to that person. I hope it helps
feel free to send me a invite request on linked-in

Michael,
Thank you for your service. In my volunteer work for Wounded Warrior Battalion West, I suggest the book "Expert Resumes for Military to civilian Transitions" by Wendy S. Enelow and Louise M. Kursmark. This has worked well for the Warriors I support. Best of luck in your search.
