Would like to invite any advisors/mentors to critique my LinkedIn page and resume.

Michael Harton Elmendorf Afb , AK

Following sound advice from the Veteran Mentor Network group on Linkedin I would like to invite any advisors/mentors to view and critique my LinkedIn page and resume. I'm finishing a 20 yr career with the USAF this month and looking forward to transitioning back to the civilian sector. It's my hope to start a new career in the Operations, Intelligence, Information, and or Security areas. I would like to also thank you in advance for your time.

Thanks again!

Hi Michael
You have an impressive background and I can see that you have had increasingly responsible assignments throughout the years. Your summary should provide the reader with an understanding of how your particular skills in each of these positions impacted the operations and/or bottom line of the groups you managed or worked with/for. How would your experience translate to the civilian world and more importantly, what were the skills you employed that made you successful in your work. Instead of saying that you are good at something, it would be beneficial to show it.

Before you start, make a list of the skills you use in your work - including those that seem less tangible like leadership, training, mentoring, communicating. Think of stories where you handled problems that you resolved - which skills did you employ, who did you coordinate or work with, what was the outcome and was there a final benefit to the outcome - saved time/money/lives, improved security, effectively trained x number of people who went on to long careers in the air force in areas that included....., used limited resources but still got it done....

You can't put each situation in the summary (only somethings that are major) but what you can do is bullet some of the results in these situations highlighting why they were so successful - and the skills you employed. Something like:
Created a ..... through deep analysis of IT systems, logistics, ..... which was utilized in averting ..... and thereby .....

It's important to make your profile more of a readable story. A story that makes someone want to read more. You joined the air force because of ..... starting out in ... , gaining experience in ...., ....., ....., In addition to hands on experience in ..... you were also responsible for training and mentoring ..... number of people in areas as diverse as .... and .....

Having security clearance is great - is it unusual, is it difficult to get? What does it say about you that you have it - and yes, it's great that you do have it.

I hope this helps.

Mary

Hi Michael,

Another resource that I thought of for you after I looked at your linked in pofile is to apply for positions that can use your current security clearance. You can gain a signficant advantage on others because you have an active security clrearance and it still takes a while to get that done. Two sites for positions that are only available for people with clearancesr are: www.clearancejobs.com and http://content.military.com/newslettersignup/securityclearance?ESRC=ggl_mem_car_secclear.kw

The second site is set up by Monster.com.

I hope this helps.

Thanks,
Loretta Carter

No need to read any literature, your resume is the key. What you will find is that each HR employee will have certain likes and dislikes. Tailor your resume to the position your seeking.
Sometimes you might have to accept a lower position and than work your way up. The Railroads love prior military because their structure was set up by former Military Officers.

Ms. Loretta Carter, Mr. Bill Nobles & Ms. Mary Rosenbaum,

I first would like to Thank You for your time and advise! I would also like to apologizes for not responding promptly yesterday. I got called to help a family member with a urgent bathroom re-modeling problem that required quite a bit of time to fix. I have sent my resume to your emails and once again would like to thank you for taking time to help me.

Thanks!
Michael
