Ted, Look at your time in the service as if the service were a business. Not easy to do but almost all the jobs you did and skills you acquired are very likely used in business.

Then, before sending out your resume, investigate each business you plan to apply to -- what they make/do and, as important, what their customers/clients do with what the business does/makes. Tailor each resume to what you've learned from your investigation using thier nomenclature and, of course, emphasize the skills you have that your believe would fit with what they are doing, planning to do.
If you are applying for a particular job vs just finshing for a job, how do your skills fit that job.
Also, understand that when a firm adv to fill a job, there are many other jobs that may need filling IF the right person knocks on their door.
Keep or create a second copy. One for COmpanies what are integrated with the service, and one for companies that are not. I have many resumes that are targeted for the position I am seeking.
