I have spent so much time in one career and have been told that my skills do not apply to any other industry which I find disheartening.

Good afternoon. Perhaps this is a skill / function dependent issue but would be happy to discuss. I have worked across multiple financial services firms and with both front office and operational roles, as well as a being a consultant..
Feel free to reach out if you would like to discuss. I also work as an educator / mentor for professional preparedness processes, so you can take a look at something I posted about the process of preparing for a position as well on my LinkedIn page

You might try to highlight your skills at a higher or different level. Instead of focusing on hedge fund experience try to highlight problem solving skills or people leadership skills or business building skills or whatever skill or experience that is needed at any company. You should also try to highlight tangible and specific results that you’ve achieved. I know it might be tough, but be persistent and you’ll find someone to give you a chance to prove yourself.
I had this same frustration when I realized my career in public accounting was not a good fit with the military lifestyle due to costly state license fees. I am currently mid-way through a career pivot to management consulting and was recently hired by the professional service firm Accenture through their Military Recruitment program. For those accepted into their development program, the company allows you 18-24 months to fill any skills gap you may have before you choose an industry to align with. I personally am working on some data visualization and process automation software skills in order to serve financial services clients.
