Deloitte Impact Day 2019

Veteran

Robert Perez San Antonio , TX

Good day, Advisors at Deloitte. I hope this message finds you in the best of spirits. Thank you so much in advance for the sponsorship of this platform. Yesterday, was the conclusion of the Wounded Warrior Project® (WWP) Warriors to Work - Deloitte 2-day Boot Camp in San Antonio, Texas.

Steve Murray and his staff were phenomenal in the design and delivery of the block of instructions to the veterans and family members in attendance. The second half of Day 2 was the most beneficial event for me ─ mock interviews that were conducted by Deloitte, USAA, and Dr. Pepper representatives. Attendees were given feedback, and all (strengths & weaknesses) is captured on an elevation sheet.

That said, Mr. David Grant, Government Recruiting Leader - Talent Acquisition, requested me the day prior after reviewing my resume. He stated that it was "better than most he has ever seen," which meant a lot from someone with his stature. He only recommended two small revisions and concluded with, "see me tomorrow, let's see what YOU got." So, when the time came for the group to select who they desired as their interviewer out of nowhere a high number requested Dave. So, I had to choose another team and opted for the USAA team.

Long story short, the gentleman who created the sign-in charter had a mix up with the locations and placed wrong company names with interviewing teams. It turns out my interviewing dual consisted of Alvin "AL" Lee from Deloitte and Carla from Dr. Pepper unbeknownst to me. The entire time I am referencing USAA throughout my trial run and in the closing phase when asked, "do you have any questions for us?" I confirmed and proceeded to take out my prepared interviewer question sheet. I asked about the time remaining before continuing, and I began with my first question and both interviewers answered. I quick follow-up with can either of you give insight on whether "job title" at USAA is an independent role or work in a cohesive effort in a team setting.

That's when AL announces that, "neither of us is from USAA, I'm from Deloitte, and she's from Dr. Pepper." I felt myself shrink and sincerely apologize and informed him of the confusion that occurred during the sign-up. A few laughs ensued, and I stated, "I came prepared for Deloitte and that Dave Grant requested that I see him today, but due to the influx of his popularity his wait line became overloaded quickly. AL told me I'm holding onto your resume, and I'm going to pass it forward. He wasn't sure of the opportunities here in San Antonio but asked if I was willing to commute to the Austin area, I assured him for a fair compensation I would entertain it. I asked for a business card; unfortunately, he had run out, but I did give him mine.

My question is, when should I follow up with AL or Dave?

I am sending "thank you" notes out today before noon time.

Any advice is much appreciated.

Kindest,
Robert Perez

Hi Robert,

I think following up with them today should be fine. You don't want to wait more than three days or so to do a follow-up because they may not remember you. Sounds like your thank you note plan is on track. Let me know if you have any other questions.

Best,

Andrea
