My current position is a Financial Advisor for an Insurance company in NY. My MBA is in Finance and my undergraduate is in Psychology. When I was in the service my occupation was a mechanic and a supply NCO. I am very much interested to get into M&A consulting or investment banking and frankly, I am wondering what are the major differences between these two directions. How important is the valuation skill set? Is series 79 required for M&A consulting and can the consulting firm be a sponsor for this FINRA license? Can my Financial Advisor experience be applicable for an entry level opportunity in M&A consulting?

Hi Andrey. There are definitely differences between M&A consulting and investment banking. While each occupation typically deals with transactions, each is very broad and the types of problems addressed can be very different (e.g. marketing/raising capital in an IB situation vs. analyzing and evaluating the quality of a company's revenue in an M&A situation). It sounds like the combination of your Army, Financial Advisory and MBA experience would position you to pursue a job in M&A. It is very important that you have solid understanding of what a career in M&A entails - so research and networking is key. If you would like to speak with someone from our M&A team - I can introduce you.
Hello Matt. That you very much for your response to my question. I would also like to add that it was a pleasure talking to you in person during the ACP / Deloitte event. I would absolutely love the introduction; would greatly appreciate an opportunity to speak with someone who is directly involved in M&A.
