With credentials as impressive as yours, I recommend calling the directors you are looking for on the phone. You know exactly who you want to speak with and these are mostly public companies so directors' names are public. You can buy a list from Hoovers with accurate contacts or just call the company operator.
For such a small sample as 1000 contacts, I don't recommend email or LinkedIn.
Best search for business people is Linked In. You can search by title, location, alma mater, company and a variety of interests. This can be tricky if your network isn't very large at first as Linked In searches based on who you know and who those people know out to 3 levels initially. If you buy more expensive versions you can search deeper. This network can be invaluable to you throughout your career though for referrals and future job opportunities. This will not only give you the name of the person you are looking to connect with but information about them which may aid in your making contact. The person went to the same school or is a vet. All the best.
Quick add: Searching my network by just job title: "Corporate Social Responsibility" returned 5024 names. Then you just need to reach out to them.
Google Informational Interviewing. This is a great technique to find out more about an industry. Be sure to mention your are a veteran seeking assistance or help in knowing more about a career field. People like to help veterans, this is one way they can. Good luck.
