Looking for help transitioning from the Marine Corps to Corporate America

Veteran

Shane Harden Stafford , VA

I am currently a Captain in the Marine Corps (Infantry Officer), who has graduated in the top 5% of every school and consistently ranked in the top percentile among his peers. I am looking to transition this summer but struggling finding an operations or supply chain management job with a top company. I have applied to several jobs but never hear anything back from these companies. Often, these companies don't provide contact information on their website so that I could follow-up with a resume submission. I'm most interested in JMO programs, but I'm open to industries and companies that have a proven track record and somewhere I can have continuous professional growth to top management throughout my career. Can anyone offer assistance. Thanks for the support and help.

Shane,

I am going to make a suggestion that you may or may not find useful. The jobs of director, project manager, analyst, etc. are usually preceded by some significant technical expertise. I would suggest that you consider reinventing yourself into a field that a) is hiring and b) you like. That might include becoming a teacher (math and science teachers are in short supply), engineering or science.

I went back to school and did doctoral studies after leaving the service, and i enjoyed every minute of it.

Best of luck with whatever you decide to do, just remember, it is the rest of your life, so at the very least you should REALLY enjoy the work.

What about Costco or Ikea? Also, any kind of food production. Also try the medical field, supplies for hospitals. Try approaching these. Best Wishes, June

I want to thank everyone for their responses, especially the strange English lessen. I was recently accepted into a top ten MBA program and will be attending in the fall. I'm excited about the opportunity and look forward to the continued support from ACP. Thanks again.

Read what you have written "among his peers" huh?

" to transition this summer but struggling finding " - but am struggling?

You need to write carefully and professionally. Get help if your resume reads like this post.

Hi Shane,
If you like, contact me at pwong1@its.jnj.com. I am in supply chain management. J&J has always promoted and support our Military Service members. Our CEO and many of mid and senior management are ex-officers and West Point graduates. I believe we appreciate the leadership skills and complete the mission mentality (produce business results). We have programs specifically focus on MBA-officer recruits. Unfortunately timing is bad but we can discuss more….

Shane,
Check out www.mwacareers.org, we have a program called "Pathway to Leadership" that will bring you in at an entry level position and within 15 months move you up to management. Between 3-5 years you will be offered the opportunity to take over a state as a Regional Director.

Shane - Lots of great suggestions above. I used Military Recruiting Institute (http://www.jrofficer.com/) as I was transitioning out of the Navy. The resources there really helped me translate my Navy skills into corporate skills, and opened the door to opportunities in the corporate world that weren't always posted on the job search websites.

As Morgan mentioned above, GE has a number of programs to help veterans. In addition to the JOLP program, GE looks to hire veterans in a number of disciplines - operations, engineering, IT, sales, etc. For more information, you can check out the following website:

http://www.ge.com/careers/culture/us-veterans

If you have any questions, I'd be happy to help answer them . . feel free to email me at: amanda.volpe@ge.com.

Good luck!

Hi Shane ~

http://www.military.com/veteran-jobs

I just received this website from a Vets Job Survey thought it might help you out.

Also contact your local Workforce Comission office they have specific reps for Veterans they may be able to offer some advice.

There are some great Vets groups on LinkedIn.com and if you contact customer service and let them know you're a Veteran they will give you a free premium membership for a year. The only catch is you have to ask for it they don't offer this as an open benefit.

Good luck let me know if you have any luck!

Shane,

It sounds like we were in similar situations upon separation. I disagree Frqncis. In regards with development programs - show off your high-level achievements. They want to see you are a high achiever in all situations...in some cases all the way back to high school.

I decided to get an MBA and then go into the job market. This was a good choice because 1) companies want to hire "lifers" into their development programs meaning. They view MBA recipients as being done with college. 2) The pay for MBA grads in development programs are in line with what I made as a senior CPT.

However, JMO recruiting in corporate america is rampant. GE and Amazon have wonderful opportunities right now.

GE: http://www.ge.com/careers/culture/us-veterans/junior-officer-leadership-program
Look back often to see when they open the JOLP positions.

If you message me privately, I can give you the contacts for Amazon.

Finally, look into Cameron Brooks. They do JMO hiring fairs, help with resumes, and bring in top companies to hire JMO's. They are the best at it.I can give you their contact information also if you are interested. morganlerette@gmail.com

Don't over emphasize your academic achievements. It might make some interviewers uneasy. Just say "I've done well in school".

Long term: Think about Law School. You do not have to practice Law, but a JD will open doors to senior management, and blow away the competition with their MBA's, Accounting; Human Resources, and Polly Sci degrees.

Take the LSAT and see how it turns out for you. Most senior contracts//marketing, etc., folks in international business would welcome someone with your background plus knowledge of the Law and Contracts. I know this from actual experience.

Hint: For an active, "get it done" Marine, I would not suggest joining a Corporate Law department.

Shane-

You're on target that you should be looking at JMO programs. Ours are here (http://att.jobs/student-program/search)...While not pure JMO programs they are exactly what you want to target, and they are VERY mil friendly. Understand, though, because they are tied to the college recruiters, they have a cycle, and the summer may not net what you're looking for in terms of timing (with us).

On our careers site (www.att.jobs/military), target the following titles: Area Manager, Associate Director, Project Manager, Program Manager, Analyst.

I also sent a linkedin connection your way.

Best,

CN
