I'm interested in an entry-level I background investigator position although need the 2 week training course in Virginia. I still have an active secret clearance and prior law enforcement experience. Would a company need to sponsor me to attend, or is there another way to apply for the training? I've noticed a lot of jobs require the credentials from the course.
-thank you!

Rebecca I had a transitioning Army Sgt. in a TAP years ago, obtaining his degree from U of Cincinnati in back ground investigation. If you Google back ground investigation certifications, you will find a couple listed. One mentioned military experience was a key criteria, another one was more focused in a four year degree. The one above I believe is tied to the first one that provides credit for military experience. After investigating the certs available, I would go on Indeed and looking at job postings for the career, see which one is requested more. I would also hook up with someone in the industry and do some Informational Interviewing, Google this, as it is very useful to transitioning military or service members in general. Civilians love to help veterans or service members, but are pretty clueless about how to go about it. If you ask questions about a career (not looking for a job) that will end a conversation pretty quickly. Between those two avenues, you will feel comfortable with your results after fact finding. Many certifying agencies will tell you theirs is the best, do the research and then you are comfortable about which one will work better for you. Sometimes areas of the country may favor one over the other, so you can validate that on Indeed by looking at openings by region. Hope this was helpful.
Dear Rebecca,
The way that I read this job announcement, www.usajobs.gov/GetJob/ViewDetails/517318000, is that you apply for the job and, if accepted, the FBITP course is part of your required training. If I am correct, I believe it means that OPM-NBIB would sponsor you.
The job announcement includes Agency contact information. You might want to call them to confirm, but please in mind that this particular job announcement closes tomorrow, 12/03/2018.
Thank you for your Service, and all the best with your transition!
Sincerely,
Bob Jurasek
