I am a Combat Wounded Veteran completing my Accounting Degree at SFSU, graduating in Spring 2017. I'm debating my next step: pursue a masters degree, or pass the CPA, or enter the workforce.
I am seeking an internship; what is an Ideal Candidate at Deloitte and the Big 4? What strategy would you employ to land a Position in SF?
(Tax/Audit/Consulting/other) What Concentrations are worth pursuing? What process did you use to select a Concentration?
Which Concentration field do you recommend?

Hi Nicholas,
I'll be confirming the opinion of the other commentators. The CPA is definitely the way to go. In addition to an internship, consider some temp work with accounting or tax firms like AccountTemps. Use LinkedIn as a resource as well.

Hi Nicholas
I serve as a partner in Deloitte's audit practice. The advice from others is directly on point. My recommendation is determine your path to getting the course hours necessary for obtaining your CPA. We generally hire interns who are on that path, and then take them on full time when they have completed their course work, but often before they pass the CPA exam. I always recommend taking and passing the CPA exam as early as possible once you have the hours to be eligible to take the exam - it doesn't get any easier by waiting.
All the best,
Bob
Hi Nicholas,
If you have already met the educational requirements for CPA, it would make more sense to go down the route of obtaining the CPA. If you still need substantial number of accounting credits to satisfy the educational requirements, enrolling in a MS in Accounting program (it's a typically 30 credit program vs. 60 credits for lot of the MBA programs) might make sense as t will help you address the educational requirements for CPA as well as you'll earn a graduate degree in the process.
Hi Nicholas,
While I am not in accounting at Deloitte, my fiancé was, and he found that as he progressed in his career, the CPA would have been extremely helpful to him in advancing within the firm. It would have allowed him to get onto the types of projects he wanted to be on to gain the experience he desired. He is a Certified Defense Financial Manager (CDFM), but found increasingly that the CPA was more needed in the type of accounting work he sought to do.
As far as the "ideal" candidate for Deloitte, there is no cookie cutter mold-- we employ folks from a wide variety of backgrounds, but experience and education will be key. Have you already started taking accredited accounting courses toward your CPA? What is your undergraduate background?
Best,
Andrea
