Looking for a maintenance position in the civilian sector.

Veteran

Juan Campos Odessa , TX

I currently reside in Odessa Texas. This is known as the Permian Basin home of oil field country. I have worked in various jobs as a mechanic since I got out of the service in May 2008. The problem that I have is the fact that my resume is rather lengthy due to the various jobs that I have had since I got out. I have been told by many people that I have applied with that I am overqualified. I would like to see if there is anyway that I can get some help with my resume to make me more acceptable in the market. Also if anyone knows of any leads in Texas for employment it would be greatly appreciated.

Juan,
Consider focusing on your skills in your resume, not the various job titles. Try to group your experiences into key qualifications or areas that you want to continue to work in. Alternately, list the kinds of mechanical maintenence work you do. I suspect that you are being told you are over qualified because your resume lists job titles and doesn't adequately showcase the variety or depth of skills you already have. You can briefly list your work experience with job titles and timeframes at the end of the resume, but keep focus on your expertise, not job assignments.
I don't know anything about your field so my examples are going to be poor but here's the general idea:

Turbine Diagnostics and Repair
X years experience working on x number of turbines identifying and repairing issues with, x y z. My work helped x turbines remain operational % of time, (some quantification of the results). I am skilled, certified? in working on x, z, and y. [List the details of your qualifications here, with as much quantification of the results as possible]

XYZ Engine Maintenance
Maintained a fleet of #xyz by providing routine maintenance, emergency repair, etc.... As a result, engine downtime was consistently below targets (again, try to give some measure of the value of your work to the organization.)

Sorry my examples are not very good! I hope my suggestions are still helpful.
Best of luck.

Juan, thank you for your service.

Do you have any hydraulic or pneumatic experience? what kind of maintenance or equipment do you have experience with?

Have you considered sales? There are many industrial distributors looking for people with hustle that have a mechanical aptitude.

I'm in the oil-patch market as well, and it is tough out there right now. How about wind power maintenance? there's lots of turbines up there. Enxco, FPL Energy, MidAmerica, or Iberdrola all might be hiring.

best of luck.
