Kevin-
I am retired after a 40 year career in industry where I hired over 100 people. Now I am helping veterans like yourself by helping with their resumes. If you would e-mail me your resume (drjamesfwatson@gmail.com) I would be happy to comment on it.

Kevin,
The first thing that I would advise is that you utilize someone that has prior military service to assist you in writing your resume. There are military points that need to be included on your resume that a regular advisor might miss. In the past when I have heard of situations like yours, the first thing that I look for is something that you've said that is revealing your age. Right now the biggest form of discrimination in the country is age. "CBS Sunday Morning: Baby Boomers; America's new unemployables - Despite improving job data, older unemployed workers are having more trouble finding work, as companies favor less-experienced cheaper candidates." So if you've used words like "retired" on your resume the first thing an employer is going to do is reject you for the reason of being to experienced, meaning you're going to be too expensive to hire! An unwritten rule is not to go back more than 10 years with your resume history. If you have information that is outside of those guidelines then set up a category of "Additional Skills and Experience" In there you can list all the things that would age you without any dates, but yet you're including some very important information. There are several additional bits of information that I can assist you with and too much to try to expand upon here, so please feel free to send me your resume or get-in-touch with me if you have any further questions. I'm here to help!!! (prior service in Personnel Management, former TAP instructor, and worked for the government in Veteran Services)
Kevin,

Okay, this is going to sound like a lot of work but here's my professional advice. Forget about a generic resume. Write your resume in response to the job advertisement. Usually the first 3 items listed under job duties are the most significant priorities the employer is searching for. Determine the type of experience you have that matches these initial 3 items and develop your resume to that specific job description. This means revising your resume every time you answer and ad. Like I said...this is going to take a lot of work.
