I am transitioning from the military and I have never had to write a resume. I really need help. I am trying to apply for government jobs. I have one resume on USAJOBS.

Hi D'Yaisha-
I am retired after a 40 year career in industry where I hired over 100 people. Now I am helping veterans like yourself by helping with their resumes. If you would e-mail me your resume (drjamesfwatson@gmail.com) I would be happy to comment on it. I also recommend the book "Tired of Eating Peanut and Butter Sandwiches? - Tips to Get a Job Fast" available on Amazon. It contains practical advice. Good luck in your search!!

Hi,
The first thing that I would suggest is that you work with someone that is prior service, they will have a much better understanding of how to communicate your military expertise and training. The next thing that you will want to do is to identify yourself as prior service. First 2 words in your objective should be "Military veteran". In today's market place employers are looking for prior service because of our training, discipline, experience, and knowledge. If you have or had a security clearance, be sure to list it and what level you have or had, because that says a lot about your integrity, honesty, and you as an individual. The government doesn't hand those out to just anyone (I know because I had a top secret) and also list any Good Conduct Medals you might have, and if you have more than one list as many as you have. What employer would not want to hire someone with training, Good Conduct Medals and a security clearance (even if it's expired because you had to be good to get one in the first place!) There is so much more that goes into writing a resume, but the one thing to keep in mind is that your resume has one function and that is to get you an interview. So write it with that in mind. Also know that 2 pages are OK but no more and in sending it out do not send your references with it. Hold those until they are requested because at that point-in-time you should call your references and coach them a bit and let them know that they might get a call, so that they are prepared and can give you a good reference. If you would like any additional help/advise please feel free to contact me, ae0788@yahoo.com.
Keep it simple.. Have a " C/V"... It's a certificate vitale... Look on the internet for examples.. It should be consise and in chronological order.. You can make a couple of more pages up to explain ( in detail) aspects of your CV... If requested.

I am happy to help you. Don't worry about the resume formatting. Just send me a message and include a listing of your ranks/positions, dates for each, and in your words, describe for me your responsibilities and accomplishments, dates worked, awards and training received, and I can help put into a resume format for you.
If you send me a message with your resume attached or, if you have a Google account, upload it and share it for your Google Drive and send me a link I would be happy to review it and provide feedback.
