How do I get back in Computer Operation?

Veteran

Michael Bell Houston , TX

There are no Computer Operator courses and I have done computer operations (Systems Admin) for nearly 20 years. Are there any Certificate courses or companies that you might feel beneficial to my quest?
I already have an A.A.S. in Computer Systems Technology.

Michael - If you're single or are used to time away, consider the cruiselines. Most of the ships have at least 2 Sys Admins onboard and based on growth since I left the industry, I would expect there may be up to 10 on a larger ship. Additionally there are Sound & Light (entertainment), and Casino staff that require systems management skills.

When I was onboard we ran Tandem super-minis and about 20-40 Windows servers. There's probably about 1000 or so desktop clients now plus lots of other stuff.

Having military discipline, international exposure, and being self-driven are highly sought after skills. Depending on the company you'll probably work 3-5 months onboard and 1-2 months off along with some time in the office.

Good luck!

A booming industry for computer operations is healthcare. I would recommend checking out educational programs offered by HIMSS (http://www.himss.org/ProfessionalDevelopment) which is the largest healthcare industry organization. There is a high demand for this skill set. In addition, a high demand for java developers if you are interested in that aspect of computers. Good luck!
