Resume Review Help - 22 yr AF Vet Considering Transition to Civilian Life

Veteran

Michael Moffitt Stillwater , OK

I'm in the very beginning stages of deciding if I will transition to civilian life next summer. I know I'm already behind the power curve on this since many recommend starting 2 years out but if I press with it, I'm confident that I will dedicate the time and effort to make it happen. One of the first things I have started on is my resume. The one I have is mostly still in the military style but I'd love some help with it. If anyone would be willing to review it and provide some suggestion or even suggest a total rewrite, I'd be very thankful!

I've also been reading how important a good cover letter is but don't even know where to start there, so if anyone would share one so I can see how they SHOULD read, I can get started on that.

Michael,
Think of your resume as part of your marketing plan for your dream job.
If you can't describe the job you would most like to have, then it may be too early to start marketing your knowledge, skills, experience, education, and accomplishments. You can certainly start documenting all of this information as you prepare for your first civilian job but this document may be too long to serve as an effective resume.
If you don't have a dream job in mind, then this is a good time to research the labor market. Google "General Manager Jobs" and you will find more than 100,000 opportunities. Most of these jobs won't meet your needs so narrow down the list to those where you would like to live, that meet your salary expectations, that are in industries that have a good future over your expected work life, and that serve a purpose you would be proud to support. Since most jobs are not advertised to the public, consider joining a professional association where people in this line of work would join. Attend meetings and network with these folks to build contacts when you are ready for your new job. If "General Manager" is the wrong title, then keep using Google until you get the correct name. Prepare and be sure to ask for your dream job - you might get it because you will be totally focused on what is best for you.
If this strategy doesn't work for you, see if there is a Transition Assistance Program office on your base. They offer excellent free career planning, resume writing, and job search workshops targeted to service members just like you.
Good Luck!
Walt

Michael, I would be glad to help you; I dont think you are "behind the power curve" on this. My experience led me to believe that becoming active in your preparation/job search 2 years out is far too early. If you wish, you can email your resume to me (and cover letter), I will try to share some examples for you to consider. richmond.ellis@libertymutual.com

Best,
Richmond
