Help with finding employment with CSX

Veteran

Michael York Clarksville , TN

I am currently still on active duty but nearing my exit from the armed forces. I just wanted any advice on the best way to go about getting a job with CSX. Also, how far out from my last day in the service should i apply for a job? Thanks in advance!

Hi Michael,
The first thing to think about is what you'd like to do here at CSX. We do quite a bit more than operate trains. To get a sense of the job types we offer, you should look at the career section of CSX.com multiple times a week and read the job descriptions. Be sure to read the whole thing, there are good pieces of information spread throughout. Job postings tend to stay posted for only 7-10 days (but this depends on job type, responses, etc.) so there is a high turnover in what is available.
Next, think about where you want to live. Does CSX have facilities or job openings in that area? We essentially cover the Eastern half of the US so be sure to look at the physical location of the jobs as they post. If you are interested in railroading in the Eastern half of the country, be sure to look at Norfolk Southern as well.
Finally, when you apply be sure to tailor your resume to the job description. Highlight the skills and talents you have that also fit the job description posted. Be persistent! Keep trying, CSX is a very popular employer, especially with veterans, so you may not get a call back on the first application you submit, but keep trying!
As regards when to begin applying, it depends on your availability to interview. Most job postings try to begin candidate interviews 2-3 weeks after the posting closes, though sometimes it is sooner. The question to answer is; can I make myself available to interview?
Then, if you are offered a position, you should be ready to begin work within 1 month of the offer, if not sooner. One exception to this would be Management Trainees where you could get an offer but your start date may be more than 1 month out depending on when the class start date will be.
Using this as a very rough gauge, you can determine when you can start applying.

Michael,

First and foremost understand that depending on the job there can be hundreds of applicants, so don't be disappointed or give up after the first try if you are not chosen. Also it is very important to customize your resume for the specifics of the job. Try to utilize their same key words that are in the description. Obviously don't tell falsehoods, but highlight your strengths that are required for the job - not necessarily the strengths you personally think you have. Know that every application is reviewed by a human, not a computer.
Also we have a military recruiter here that might give you some insight. His name is Steve Toomey and he is a veteran. I will message you his contact information. Good luck!

My understanding is that when you are 90 days out, apply. They will then advise as to what areas of the county they have openings.
