Looking for a career in finance

Veteran

David Wilson Colorado Springs , CO

First I want to say this website is amazing and all of the resources ACP provides to military veterans. I am currently active duty Air Force and unsure if I will be separating within the next year or another 5 (I am waiting to see if the Air Force is going to offer early retirement again in 2015 and if that is the case I will be retiring within the next year). I am trying to prepare myself for a career in the finance industry. I am looking to network as much as possible and find out as much as I can about the industry and different opportunities. My background in the Air Force is military police (14.5 years) and I have the following education background:

Associates Criminal Justice – Community College of the Air Force
Associates Business Administration – Southern New Hampshire University (2008)
Bachelors Economics/Finance – Southern New Hampshire University (2011)
MBA/MSF – Northeastern University (expected 2015)

I am very open to any job/location and I am just wondering if anyone would be willing to review my resume (needs a lot of work) and any other advice (i.e. certs to work on) or networking opportunities. I am currently deployed overseas but live in Colorado Springs. Thank you in advance for any assistance!

Hi David,
I work for Bank of America. I have 2 suggestions. 1) Check LinkedIn - and create an account if you have not established one; 2) http://militarytransition..bankofamerica.com
Both good resources.

First I want to thank everyone for all the advice. I will be sending my resume to each of you to look over as soon as I have an opportunity to work on it a little bit more. Patrick do you have an email address for contact? I would like to talk offline more about becoming a CPA. Thanks again for all the information.

David, I'm very impressed you're already researching career opportunities, given you may still have significant time remaining in the military.
My professional career spanned 46 years in finance, the first 8 of which were as an auditor with large CPA firms and the last 38 were as the CFO for a Midwest manufacturing firm. Personally, I found that those initial years in audit opened my eyes to a variety of financial career opportunities and helped me focus on exactly where my skills and interests would be ideally matched. In addition, and maybe most importantly, the exposure to different accounting and IT systems and interacting with a variety of clients' executive teams truly prepared me for that job in industrial accounting. I can assure you that beginning with a large CPA firm also puts you on a fast career track that will absolutely astound you.
Believe me, David, my intention is not to channel you into a career direction you may not enjoy, but to offer a suggestion of a solid career choice for someone who's expressed a broad interest in the financial field.
I'd be more than glad to review your resume, as another of my CFO responsibilities was HR and I've read many of them. Please feel free to shoot me a copy at your convenience.
Best regards,
Pat Hollis

David:

My name is Joe Floyd and I was in the Air Force, also Security Police. My suggestion is that you start small and look for new companies forming and start there. It would be helpful if you know what area you want to study. I would suggest some courses in accounting, especially taxation as this area will be the most profitable. The Tax Code is getting and more complicated and experts are needed in this area. Small business really needs the help. You got to get out there and Market yourself and your skills. Besides no
one can market you like YOU.

Hope this helps. I was in small business for thirty years and have sine retired. If I help let me know.

David,

Figuring out which area of finance is certainly the most important first step. I have worked in both trading and corporate finance, let me know if you have any questions and feel free to send your résumé over.

Thanks,
AC
