Is my professional website on point?

Veteran

Joshua Moss Alameda , CA

I'm seeking a job in marketing, project management or business intelligence. I've created this website (averyplannedexitfromthemilitary.com) to showcase my resume and portfolio. It is focused on marketing aspects of my job, and I'd like to know:
A. Is it well made for this purpose?
B. Is it well rounded enough to send to potential leads for management or analyst jobs?

Vets, the site hosts my blog which I am filling with advice for transitioning to the private sector. Please subscribe and send me topics that you think are relevant and helpful to this community.

Thank you very much for your time.
-Josh

Specific to your website, resume and LinkedIn profile, I advise including a concise and effective "positioning statement" on your site, and as the "introduction" to your resume and as the summary section of your LinkedIn profile.

Spent Half an hour typing... and lost everything I said. So like the movie Space Balls... This is the "short short version." Lesson learned - you might want to type answers and responses... in a note on your pc... and copy your text while you answer in case what I did ... happens to you! :'( sniff sniff. And I was almost done! uhhh So hit CTRL A + Copy stuff like this.

A. Is it well made for this purpose?
Your wording is interesting. Technical. After looking at your site I have the general feeling = military. And I don't think that is your intention right? You want a job in marketing/advertising/direction, etc.
So, I would recommend loosing "themes that are personal." Right now you might loose anyone who was not in the military/does not love war. The object is to be "business professional and highlight your work." I do not see any examples of your work - if I missed it ... because it got "lost in a theme." You have maybe a few minutes to GRAB someones attention. So first looks are very important. People might disagree with me... but a good way to loose potential customers/hiring managers/companies, etc. is to use a heavy theme or even - use a song. Anyone who does not like that singer/song - you will lose them FAST!

Business Like = neutral, professional, straight forward, focused.
Know your audience and potential companies that you wish to work for. Look at their sites and think about what would they like to see. Know your competition too! Look at online resumes of other art directors/marketing v.p.s/creatives/ A great site to sign up and also have an online portfolio is www. behance.com That is run by... ADOBE! Anyone in design/art/web/marketing/ads works with Adobe and uses their products! Perfect! Now you are in a fish tank with other folks like you - even potential employers! Some art directors/marketing people also like doing photography, etc hobbies... on sites like that = NETWORKING! And actually get out to shows/release parties/etc and Network - get a business card with your contact info = a little resume/calling card. Vistaprint is a great site for business cards, etc and good pricing for "small jobs - personal projects!" Use them all the time.
Uh oh! PC acting weird... better get to the punch and copy n paste again! rrrr rrrr.

B. Is it well rounded enough to send to potential leads for management or analyst jobs?
A good START. You don't have any work/experience on there from what I can remember. And what people - any person leaves with after looking at a site is HUGE! I don't see much "content" - images of websites you have completed, projects you have done, logos, businesses small and large that you have worked for/with....

Don't be offended by my review. Your site was: Clean - Had white space - Well organized - and professional. Some big companies have terrible sites! Amazon one of them. Love THEM - terrible site. Like an online "encyclopedia" all jumbled.

So start "bookmarking" sites you love, other art directors sites, ad company sites - they are drumming up business too and take NOTES! Then, I would go back to your site. Other thing - I don't really understand your URL address name. As a "non-military person," I could not figure out what you are trying to "say." You might want a more simple one - one people will remember easily "user friendly" and memorable! Your name.com Artdirectorjoshua.com something very direct/focused/and easily memorable and easy to type!

Best of luck to you in your field and getting a great job you love! Thank you for serving our country!

* One of the job-postings is no longer available.

* 2 of the remaining 2 job postings mention "project management". Are you familiar with PMI.org, the Project Management Professional (PMP) certification, and VCTP Syracuse (free certification training, much more, see article below). Please research these and tell us what you think.

Over 16,000 job on indeed.com match on "PMP".

Article re VCTP Syracuse

* Are you familiar with the concept of a career skills gap analysis? I suggest you teach yourself this concept, and prepare an analysis of how the overall qualifications in your resume and on your LinkedIn profile compare to the explicit and implied qualifications , etc. for each of the jobs you posted, as well as other jobs that interest you. Share your analysis with us.

* One of the posting mentions the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence (BI) System. Are there certifications you can earn that can help you demonstrate your knowledge and competency with the MicroStrategy Business Intelligence (BI) System?

see: http://www.microstrategy.com/us/training-events#!

* Research professional organizations and professional certifications relevant to your career goals. Professional organizations offer formal and informal mentoring programs, networking opportunities, and skills-development opportunities. Are there professional organizations related to Project Management, Business Intelligence, and Social-Media you can join and with which you can "get involved"?

Which professional organizations and certifications are relevant to your career goals?

e.g. https://www.google.com/search?q="Business+Intelligence"+professional+organization#!

* Research SCIP.org and let us know if it interests you.

That a lot of work, and I hope it is helpful. Feel free to provide feedback. Mentors and advisors can help, the vast majority of the work is yours.

Joshua,
Thanks. If you wish, please also include jobs for which you're not currently qualified, perhaps jobs you might apply for in 6 months or 3-5 years. These "future" jobs can help you and us suggest a career development and skills development path e.g. certifications, etc.
