Was a hairstylist for over 20 years. Worked at elite salons: Mario Tricoci, Vidal Sassoon, then went to college later in life. Graduated from Northern Illinois University in Fine Arts with a French minor. Visual Communications major. Design study abroad to Europe: Spain/Italy/France. Worked at Salton - makers of the George Foreman Grill as a Personal Care, marketing graphics and marketing assistant to a V.P. and the Publicity Manager for Mr George Foreman. Nice man. The company is now closed.
Always dealt with depression, but fell very ill and now on gov disability because of it. Also minor brain - slowness thanks to an ECT gone bad - so no more full time jobs. Very disturbing at first. But for some miracle I got "better - not cured." Also now have spinal arthrosis in facet joints, so that limits me too. Tire easily - but still mentally "better" a huge miracle for me after 15 years!
So I am taking it one day at a time and started volunteering. First at a great museum - 4th in nation - The Discovery Center in Rockford briefly. Then I joined www.Nextdoor.com for a solid year until I got a nasty stalker online due to "muting her post!" uhh. But that was volunteer too.
I am 40 years plus. Period ;) and going for a masters degree online as soon as I can straighten out a defaulted loan - not rich on SSD. So looking forward to becoming a "part time" Professional Mental Health Counselor! Few more months.
I have been through "hell and back mentally." So I feel I am ripe enough and experienced enough to help those so they don't get down as low as I got - told I could stay at a YMCA after my hospital stay. I never want to ever hear that or living in a group home / home for mentally ill and take my beloved furry son Bentley away ---- ever again!
