Good day,
I am a military spouse of an active duty service member stationed in the DMV (DC, Maryland, Virginia) area. I just graduated with my MBA and I am looking at pursuing my certification as a PMP (Project Management Professional). I do not know where to start. Does anyone have an recommendations to any education institutions that I could contact that cater to military members and their dependents who are interested in obtaining their PMP certification?

Hi Sabrina,
Syracuse University’s Institute for Veterans and Military Families offers free training to military spouses and one of their learning pathways is for PMP certification. It’s a great resource. Take a look here: https://ivmf.syracuse.edu/programs/career-training/learning-pathways/
Hello Sabrina, I'm PMP certified and annually coach team members at my company on achieving both their PMP certification and related internal certifications my organization offers. Although I don't know of any companies that specifically cater to the military, I can provide you some background information that may help you get started in prepping for the exam. FYI, the exam format was just changed on January 2 of this year.
Hi Sabrina,
Instead of starting with a certification and then looking a matching role, go reverse, narrow down via linkedin roles that interest you, then qualifications of those of mid and early start. It will lead you to PMP or something else, which matters to those in industry in DMV.
Side note, MBA should be pretty good for launching a career on it's own.
Here's to a successful new year
Please check out the nonprofit Veteran Project Manager Mentor Alliance (VPMMA) at https://www.thevpmma.org/. Registering as a mentee will allow access to experienced project managers that can help with all aspects of obtaining your PMP as well as how to successfully navigate the job market and succeed in a project management career.
Sabrina, good morning. I’m glad others answered your specific question – about education – because I have no knowledge there. However, I got my PMP more than 20 years ago (and subsequent PMI-ACP) and totally recommend the profession for the right people. So many PM jobs allow for WFH and that seems to me to be an advantage for you should you relocate in the future.
PMI requires a combination of education and experience to sit for the exam. The experience can be other than work related. Volunteer work counts.
My experience here in Texas is that project managers are in high demand. The issue so often is getting a ‘foot in the door’. If you would like to discuss, please feel free to reach out to me. Thanks.
