I may be getting a promotion at my current employer but I dont want to be a floor officer for the rest of my career. My goal is to become a Security Director and so would a Masters Degree be worth it?
Answers
HI Jessie,
Are you looking in the cybersecurity space or physical security space? If it's the former, I would suggest getting a CISSP (certified information systems security professional) certification. It's the gold-standard in cybersecurity certifications and looks at each domain through a "CEO-lens". While it is a very challenging certification, it won't set you as far back financially as masters degree will.
Additionally, if you are open to switching companies, Deloitte is always looking to hire veterans in this space. We have the number 1 cybersecurity offering (ranked by Gartner), and are growing rapidly. Feel free to message me if you'd like to chat about opportunities.
Best,
Steve
No. The degree is too narrow and limiting.
Spent your time and money getting an MBA
Jessie,
I would cruise Indeed searching for the position Security Director and compile a master list of qualifications, based upon size of company, location, and other demographics that seem to impact the position. The best source after general research on large data bases, i.e. careeronestop.org/glassdoor.com etc. are positions that are currently be advertised. The requirements will change over time, those changes will show up quicker in actual job postings.
Hi Jessie. In my opinion, the best approach is to get a job at a security firm to get some experience. While at the firm, check out the management at the firm and see how that fits your credentials and goals. Also check out the opportunities in the firms you are providing security for. Many firms want to hire security management from a security firm to gain the experience from the work at the security firm.
The golden triangle in NC may be a good place to start. Good Luck.
