I have 5 years of active duty and my TS expired 6 months ago. How do I get it renewed in order to get better looks in the job market.

I agree with Mr. Viel. I held the security level when working as a Safety Consultant for the FAA. When the contract ended, so did the clearance. Much like in the military, it is dependent on the requirements of the billet. What I don't understand is why (in Washington DC) I see the job description as requiring an "active" security clearance. Maybe they are looking to steal from other contracts, that would be my guess. And take into consideration that millions of people that had applied for the clearance had the information hacked from the Feds.
Stephen,
I have held a Secret clearance for more than 10 years now. It has been my experience that an employer must initiate the renewal of your security clearance. However, I do not believe that having one currently would really shy potential employers away. The fact that you have previously held a clearance and it expired on its own accord shows that you could in fact get one successfully. It may be possible that you are in need of an updated resume. If you are interested, I would be more than happy to review your current resume and provide any tips that I may have.
I truly hope this helps
Good Luck,

Hi Stephen,
The TS can be reactivated so suggest you download Form SF 86, (http://www.opm.gov/forms/pdf_fill/SF86.pdf), research the questions and the data required to fill out the form and complete it truthfully and accurately, so that when you speak to prospective employers, you can say you have a completed draft of the form to help them get the clearance required. This also exphasizes proactivity on your part.
Note that the level of security clearance of a job requirement may be Secret or TS and the SF 86 will suffice for whatever clearance is required.
Good Luck.

Not if each of the employers I talk to will not take me since it is not active
A new employer should have no trouble renewing this within 2 years. You can't just do it yourself. You can let them know when it expired, they'll be able to verify it.
