What is the best way to find a logistical job in the corporate world

Veteran

Kevin Burch Grantsville , UT

Hello, I am currently in the Army Reserves, Commissioned as a Transportation Officer and have made the ranks of Captain. I have served as a Logistical Management Specialist for a one Brigade and am currently in the position for another brigade. I have done transportation, food service, supply chain management and property accountability, and contracting. I am wondering what is the best way to go about transforming military experience into corporate experience and what is the best way to find logistical positions. While in the military I have served as a Company Commander, and am use to managing both resources and personnel.

Hi Kevin,
I think you've received some great answers on here, and would just like to add my two cents in, as well. So there are plenty of logistics-based companies, like FedEx, UPS, etc. But additionally, I think you should look into operational roles with other companies, as well. While these roles may not seem like next steps for someone in your position, the reality is that a lot of the qualifications and requirements (quantitative skills, managing multiple workstreams, coordination between adjacent work units) are very similar. Just a thought about places to look to. Hope that helps!

Might check with Fed Ex, UPS, or the trucking companies. This is out of my knowledge area but you should always go with a confident attitude. You have a lot of skills and your intent to improve your education is noteworthy in showing your persoal drive for personal improvement.

Kevin - I'd also suggest looking at manufacturing companies in your local area that might have openings for roles within the supply chain management area. It looks like your Marine Corps experience with logistics & transportation as well as your leadership skills would be a nice compliment to a role in supply chain management. I am a Navy veteran turned Supply Chain Materials Leader, so if you have any questions or would like someone to review your resume, I'd be happy to help.

Raymond, I was looking back through my previous questions and revisited your post. I was wondering if you still knew the folks that might be able to use my military background within their organization. Thank you for your posts.

Thank you Raymond, and yes I am some what near Joplin, Mo for I am in the South part of Kansas City. I would be grateful for the opportunity that you might come with those that could possibly use my brand of leadership. I have also done load planning and validation for ARCENT when I was deployed with them last time.
I am thankful for both responses from Raymond and Lynette and will look into the possibilties that you mentioned within your posts.

You might want to apply to companies like Federal Express as they have a logictic department within their company or UPS. The experience you have should mirror the position you are looking for. Since you are a transportation officer you should look at corporate companies that deal with yoour line of work and level of experience. You should also check with your local EDD office to see if they can match you up with companies that want your level of expertise. You could also seek a government job as government jobs tend to require some of the same job skills as the military.

Hope this helps

Sir -

Welcome back. After leaving active duty, I pursued employment in transportation operations, starting off in load planning and quickly transitioning into transportation procurement financial analysis. I had no military trans / log experience with only background as an IN NCO with some squad and staff experience in the rifle company and in S-3. Your background already points to being good in linehaul and assets coordination for a variety of freight classes in the CENTCOM theater, so I'd highlight that. I know of two National Guard Transportation Corps Officers at my current job who started off load planning, quickly picking it up and transitioning in a hurry to the next level of responsibility. If you are within range of Joplin, MO, I may know of some folks who could use your brand of leadership.
