I am in the process of apply for a medical support assistant position with the department of the Navy. I have a degree in Healthcare Management and Supervision with two years of experience working in healthcare. However, my Air Force career (14 years) has been working as an intelligence analyst.
I am looking for feedback on ways to make my resume more appealing and suited to the medical support job.

Amanda, generally speaking, there are things about your career that still apply to medical support and you can highlight those in a resume, and focus on those in hiring conversations. When I left the Marine Corps infantry for software I didn't talk about shooting, marching, and digging, but I did talk about planning, executing, and advising which piqued hiring manager interest. I strongly recommend Dorie Clark's book "Reinventing You" (https://g.co/kgs/jzXVbC).
Specifically, healthcare has been thrust into technology beyond the normal (practice management systems, EHRs, etc.). Showing that you not only understand what they are using now, but are flexible and capable to help as they move forward into new territory, will definitely be interesting. Happy to talk with you about what I see in major health systems today.
Hello Amanda. I put together a document that is intended to help military people, transitioning to civilian careers, create resumes to target various positions they may be interested in. It is a process that has been used by people on this board, as well as civilians. I will be glad to share this with you, just message me requesting it.
Good luck.
Joe
I’d suggest that you network at the target company or industry. Use LinkedIn to find people already working there and reach out to them. Ask them the process they used to get hired and ask them to help you navigate the hiring process and if they are willing, ask them to submit you as a referral. These activities require much more time on your part but in my opinion would greatly increase your chances for success. Good luck!
Amanda,
Drew was dead on, intelligence may have been your career field, but no one in healthcare will look at your profile see a correlation. Seek out and obtain an ACP mentor and start some Informational Interviews in healthcare. Determine if there are business analysts in the healthcare industry and bring that deep dive skill to healthcare in a way they will the value for them. Right now your profile is not finding a home where you wish it too be. Never pay for any resume writing or LinkedIn profile assistance. There are far too many places to obtain valuable information with paying. Here are a couple of articles.
Remember that you are part of the 0.5% of Americans who serve their country. You are very well respected, but the chance civilians have been part of the 0.5% simply means they will not understand your language or experiences-without translation. Thank you for your support and sacrifices. God Bless https://www.linkedin.com/pulse/come-prepared-transition-process-gap-between-civilian-jerry-welsh/
