Paying for Graduate School

Veteran

Brenda McClain Missoula , MT

I am a disabled (10%) veteran currently going to school full time using my GI Bill. I am a senior and my tuition assistance is about to run out. I plan to go to graduate school but I have no idea how I am going to pay for it! I am hoping to find something that is designed to assist veterans pay for school. Thank you!

Brenda,
What school are you attending? Have you spoken with counselors at your school (Financial Aid counselors, counselors in the Veterans Services office, etc.)?

Some states offer free tuition to veterans and especially disabled veterans.
see for example:

Also consult with your states department of Veterans Affairs.

Hello Brenda,

In addition to what Janelle has said, you should also look in to your local state schools. Some of them offer discounts to veterans (Washington State University has a 50% discount) , and some even offer free tuition ( I believe Colorado State offers free tuition, housing, and textbooks)

Hope this helps.

Brenda,

Do you work? If so check to see if your employer has a tuition reimbursement program. If you're not working, I would suggest trying to find work in your field with an employer with a tuition reimbursement program, it may not be the route you want to go but its just a suggestion. I would also google some options for paying for graduate school. I would also look into the Student Veteran Association to see if they have any suggestions about pay for school. Another suggestion would be to ask some veteran graduate students to see if they have any information or suggestions.

I was active duty 2003-2007. I have been using my GI Bill to include the post 9/11 (chapter 33) benefits. It is set to run out of time next spring.

Brenda,
How long have you been in the military? If you've been in since '01, you still have and should apply to receive your post 9/11 benefits.
