I want to transition into the Cybersecurity Field. I have the education but no experiance. What roles should I be applying for in order to land a job.

Benny Rodriguez Blythewood , SC

I need help navigating the cybersecurity field and its many roles. I'm confused as to where I fit in with my MS cybersecurity and security + certification. I also need help deciding what additional education I need to obtain to land a job in this field once I retire. Thanks for your advice.

Benny,Raytheon Technologies hires veterans. look for a position like ISSO information System Security Office, it is an entry level job that can lead to very good work.
Do you have a security clearance?

Benny-
Thanks for your service!
Have you checked out Fortinet?
https://www.fortinet.com/corporate/careers/vets.html
They provide military to civilian transition guidance specifically for the cybersecurity field.

Some career options include security for the cloud, systems security (as a systems administrator), network security (as a network engineer), security architect (planning and designing infrastructures with built-in security), incident responder, computer forensics expert, penetration tester, ethical hacker (to support offensive / defensive operations and Red / Blue Team exercises), compliance auditor, and cybersecurity analyst (to analyze reporting data and support threat prediction).

Of these many roles, I recommend focusing on your passion. Do you enjoy hardening systems? - then maybe a Systems Administrator or Network Engineer role is right. Do you like assessing if systems and networks meet security requirements? - then maybe a compliance auditor role is right for you. Do you like reviewing log data and applying analytics? - then many a cybersecurity analyst role is for you. Once you identify your passion, then you can figure out what types of certifications you should pursue in your chosen specialty area.

I also recommend you find an ACP Mentor in the IT / Cybersecurity field who can help you think through the options and help you with a transition plan / professional development plan.

I hope this helps!
Good luck!
