I am looking to transition from a healthcare leadership role into healthcare consulting / project management. I plan to get PMP & Lean Six Sigma certified this year. I am looking for any information on how to make this transition. I have tried to transition for several years now and always end up in operational management roles. How can I translate my experience to a consulting / project management type role?

Hello Courtney,
Some quick thoughts for you may want to consider:
1. Consider looking into the change management field. This is growing in demand for various fields. There are a number of change management certs to look at - one by ProSci and Association of Change Management Professionals (this is also an organization to explore joining). With that being said, certs are not necessarily a golden key, but they may be expected by certain organizations just to be considered for a job.
2. Is relocation an option? Many employers and clients are sensitive to where an employer or consultant is located. A bigger city brings more opportunities.
3. Network - Meeting people is critical. Build relationships and trust and then they might bring up a role they need filling or hear of one from a friend. While it's more work, it's far more effective for a person to ask for your resume than submitting them online.
I hope this helps you get the work you're seeking, Courtney!

Courtney, those certifications will help in opening some doors. I echo Robert's advice and will add to search for what you want to do and where you want to be. Cast a wide net in searching for new jobs. For me, i typically do something like 'Project Management" in a wide circle then continue to whittle it down. Do you want to stay in healthcare in Navarre or can you open it up to project management in 100 miles of Navarre? I just landed a six sigma black belt position in a healthcare advocacy company by doing that wide search. Good luck!
You may want to start with LinkedIn and search for healthcare consultant positions; it is also dependent on what "clinical" background you have (Nursing, ancillary, etc.) as to what project/company is looking for. Also get in some list-serves (MedScape, Modern Healthcare) that talk about what is going on in the industry for project/company growth and check their web sites for positions
