I recently relocated to a new state and I am having trouble finding a career. My degree is in communications, but my experience is in mortgage banking. I really would like to pursue something more on the communications side that's not sales, but lack experience other than what I obtained in school. Most jobs want you to have so many years experience, but how can I get the experience if I'm never given an opportunity?

Two ideas (and they won't surprise you :)):
You say you are in a news state. Make friends, start volunteering, join a church or other organization, and/or meet people however you can. Impress them with your personality & drive, and get the word out that you are looking for a job! If one of your friends told you "I know someone in your new area, you should look them up," then look them up. Network!
Communications is such a broad field, so work on narrowing it down. What is your dream job in 5-10 years, and what job(s) would you need to get there? In other words, backwards-map from the future to now. Consider identifying your strengths by taking Gallup's CliftonStrengths inventory (online, $20, research-based & very helpful IMHO) https://www.strengthsquest.com/home.aspx
Best wishes!
