A little snippet about myself, recently finished MBA in 2017, worked in many functional areas around computers in the domain of computer systems with the US Army, Amazon, and Northop Grumman. I recently landed at an end client (onsite) and seek career guidance/exploration.
I reached out to my product owner/scrum master/project manager, but since I am a contractor, there is some things that are not available to me. Currently, I'm on a two year contract with my current employer. I want to know if there's anything I can proactively do to drive my own career in software.
I am currently looking into Java certification (Oracle Certified Associates), and AWS Developer track. To put simply, I'd like to use this time to revamp my skills during off hours.
If you know anyone you can refer me to or if you can give any advice/guidance, I'd be very grateful.

Asking a temp agency to refer jobs to you of the kind you're looking for should be a good place to start. The recruiter would let you know what you qualify for, as well as what would be needed to get particular jobs. You'll also have a lot of job postings coming your way, so you can see what requirements are listed on them. Looking at several companys' job postings on their websites would also give some idea of what they're looking for.
Doing online tutorials would be another good avenue to try out, as it will give you additional practice. Making some small applications as code examples could help too (some places request code samples with a resume, but most don't).
Let me know if you have any other questions!
