Writing is my passion however, I don’t have the faintest idea of how to start in the industry. I have a work that a publisher was interested in that is centered on experience serving, but I had a bad feeling about it all. Since then I’ve devoted myself to writing and have several works in progress. Any advice of someone to work with for guidance, groups to join, etc? Should I start writing for a magazine or paper Maybry do some freelance work to get experience? Thanks in advance.

1. Find a critique group (search for MeetUps or other groups in your area focusing on writing. You need to have independent review of your work to make sure it is accessible. 2. Yes, write for anyone who might take it, even just for getting the credit. Most of us wrote for a while just to get credits and clips. 3. Write a lot and be unafraid to toss out writing that just isn't that good. You'll just get better. Use every opportunity to write even if it isn't the creative stuff you want to do. 4. Consider starting by writing for magazines that vets want to read.
Don't let anything stop you. Most people can't write - you can. Work on your craft and you will get your dream, but remember, you can write while you do other things. Many years of writing at work helped me really hone my skills.
Hi Michael,
My brother is a writer and has been quite successful. He is retired now but has on occasion been willing to help people who are interested.

Hi Michael,
While I may not be able to help directly--I too have a passion for writing (albeit spoken word poetry). Would certainly recommend starting a blog, to share your work--and if you ever need a second set of eyes, feel free to share with me at adamjordan711@gmail.com.
Separately, I serve on the Board of Directors for VALOR--a veterans support employee resource group within S&P Global. Am sure that our group would be very interested in hearing your work.
