Would like to transition into the project or event management arena. How could I make myself competitive for these position? Most jobs are looking for individuals with at least 5 years of experience. Are there training classes I could look into attending to help gain more experience?
Thank you in advance!

My thoughts, that is a crowded path, instead volunteer at conferences by going & helping a lot like Tim Ferriss did, with goal of creating your own conference
Training classes are NOT experience. Volunteering is. Look for organizations that hosts multiple events and volunteer to support the planning and execution. You could also look into the hospitality industry, i.e., hotels with event space. Or join an event management company and work your way up...
Hi Renisha,
Thank you for your service and for posing this thoughtful question. With respect to project management, you may have heard of the professional designation, "Project Management Professional" or PMP for short.
May be worth looking into as earning the certification will certainly further differentiate you from your peers. Employers value the tools it equips candidates who hold this credential as it shows a level of competency when it comes to various project management methodologies such as waterfall, agile, scrum, etc.
Hope this helps!

Hello -
If you're interested in event management, check out www.smgworld.com and www.iavm.org IAVM is the International Association of Venue Managers and SMG is the largest venue management firm in the world (and my employer). Both sites have open positions posted on a regular basis, and IAVM has a solid training program. Best of luck, and please let me know if you need help with resume review, etc.
