I am currently working with a Gunnery Sergeant in the Marine Corps who is having trouble getting interviews. He feels like he has a solid resume but reports back to me that he feels it's getting lost in the shuffle and not in the hands of the hiring manager.
Any advice for this Marine on how to ensure his resume gets looked at?
Thank you in advance!

Erik, to Drew’s point, networking is paramount. One study conducted in 2016 with a moderate to large sample size revealed networking leading to personal referrals accounted for 85% of all positions filled across all major job seeking groups:

As you’ve often times heard me say, your network is your networth- that’s not only in a monetary sense but also with respect to quality of life, meaningful relationships, enriched friendships, sense of purpose, etc.
Lucky for the Gunnery Sergeant, you’re quite the Master Networker in more ways than one. No doubt he’s in good hands with the tips/pointers you’ll provide him with.
Pleasure working with you toward this noble mission,
Rob
Erik: it could be any number of things, but my default advice in these cases is that submitting a resume without networking is rarely successful. I realize that's just, like, my opinion, man (to quote the Dude) but I find that starting with a personal connection is always more successful than starting with an online portal.
I agree that networking is key, but so is a good resume applied to relevant jobs. When an applicant is having trouble getting interviews, it's usually one of two things: Either the resume needs work or you are applying to jobs for which you are not as qualified as you think you are. Is the resume clearly written and specific to the jobs he is applying to? I am happy to take a look at the resume and talk with the Gunny Sergeant. Great feedback Drew, I appreciate it and will certainly relay that to the Gunny!
