Veteran

Jamell Culbreath Columbus , OH

I am getting ready to start another contract position as a Senior Accounting Clerk with a company and need some suggestion on how I can continue to look for full time employment with other companies to include interviewing with these companies. Any suggestions?

Jamell--
This is not uncommon to be in a situation where you have a job now while looking for another at the same time. It takes a lot of mental and physical energy to do both together. Your first priority should be doing the BEST you can at your current, contract position. If you don't excel where you are now, it will detract from your future opportunities. Make sure you don't do any looking while you're working.

When it comes to scheduling job interviews, you need to give your current employer as much notice as possible. Generally prospective employers understand that they need to be more flexible when interviewing folks who are currently employed.

Hi Jamell,

Beef up your educational background. Get into a good accounting program and obtain a masters in public accounting. Then get your CPA. Enhance your excel skills. Dont just be good at it, be great. It is alot of work, and it will take several years, but it is like laying a strong foundation for a home. Your home will stand for a hundred years.

If you have any questions, please do not hesitate to get in touch with me.

Jamell, I would surely take action on what Chris mentioned in his post. Additionally, I would ask if you have considered other areas of experience and tried to get online certifications while you are employed at your current company. Contract or permanent it is good to agressively enhance your certifications to make your more marketable. It's all about what value do you add to your prospective employer.
One note, I highly recommend focusing on what your strengths are and what you really like to do and see if there is a demand for these skills then look at consulting as a plan b.

Hope this helps.

Hi Jamell-

There is a lot out there. It helps to know where to look. Contracting firms will be very effective at finding you your next contract position, but to gain perm employment you sort of have to do it yourself.

As an AT&T guy, I'll first say 1) we're really interested in bringing more of us into the fold. Veterans are simply good for business. 2) As a big multinational, we've got fits for pretty much every career field you could imagine...typically I answer the "what jobs do you have " question with "what do you want to do?". To see what we have available, visit www.att.jobs/military. The Job Search and Apply tool will get you where you want to be.

2) Target other military-friendly employers. www.100000jobsmission.com is a coaltion of such employers; the main page of the site will get you directly to the linkages you need to get to the partners' opportunities.

3) Use tools targeted at recruiting veterans and their families...www.h2h.jobs is a good one.

Best,

CN
